Functional Labs & Nutrition Oversight for Pregnancy

A different kind of - add on- prenatal care — built on your labs, your body, and what your body actually needs

Standard prenatal visits are wonderful for monitoring. But they rarely have the time — or the lens — to ask why your iron is dropping, why your blood sugar is creeping up, or what you could be doing now to set up an easier third trimester and birth.

This program fills that gap. It's functional medicine oversight layered alongside your existing prenatal care, designed by a licensed midwife and functional dietitian to read your bloodwork like a story and translate it into a clear, trimester-by-trimester plan for nourishing yourself and your baby.

You keep your current provider. We add the depth.

Why I created this program

I built this program with three intentions at its heart: to keep your pregnancy as low-risk as possible and help prevent complications, to strengthen the epigenetic foundation we pass on to our babies, and to empower you with evidence-based education so you can make truly informed decisions about your care. Here's why each matters so much to me.

As a midwife, I'm trained to recognize and manage complications when they arise in pregnancy — and that skill matters deeply. But my real passion lives a step earlier: in preventative care that works to lower the risk of those complications before they ever take hold. So much of what shapes a pregnancy can be supported and strengthened well in advance, and that's where I most want to spend my energy alongside you.

The second reason is that the womb is your baby's very first environment, and it lays down an epigenetic blueprint that can influence their health for life. The conditions a baby develops in — inflammation, insulin resistance, elevated stress hormones — help shape how their genes are expressed long after birth. The care you invest in now reaches far beyond your own pregnancy; it's an investment in your child's foundation, and in the generation that follows.

And finally, I believe deeply in your right to understand your own care. This program is built to give you clear, evidence-based education on the pregnancy and newborn topics that carry real choices — gestational diabetes screening, GBS, vitamin K, and more — so you can decide what's right for you and your baby with genuine understanding rather than pressure.

Functional Medicine for pregnancy - Not because pregnancy is a medical condition but because it optimizes health in order to remain low risk and have the opportunity for the home birth that is desired

Why labs and individualized nutrition matter

Pregnancy is one of the most biologically responsive windows in a person's life — and many of the complications that surface later leave early, measurable signals in your bloodwork, often long before any symptom appears. Your inflammation, iron status, blood sugar regulation, thyroid function, methylation capacity, and essential fatty acid balance each shape how your pregnancy unfolds and how your baby develops. Research consistently connects these markers to outcomes that matter most: preterm birth, gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, your baby's brain development, and the iron reserves they're born with.

Seeing them early is what changes the outcome. Rather than waiting for a problem to appear and then managing it, we can read your individual picture, catch risks while they're still quietly forming, and respond with nutrition and supplements targeted to your body instead of a generic prenatal template. That's the difference this program is built on: care that's proactive instead of reactive, and personalized instead of one-size-fits-all — working to keep your pregnancy low-risk and give your baby the strongest possible start.

For the research behind each marker, see the Addendum below.

Your guide

This program is led by a licensed midwife and functional dietitian — a combination that's rare for a reason. It means your care sits at the intersection of clinical pregnancy expertise and deep, food-and-physiology-based nutrition science. You're not getting generic wellness advice; you're getting guidance from someone qualified to interpret prenatal labs and to build the nutritional plan that responds to them.

With more than 20 years as a dietitian and a practicing midwife since 2020, I've spent two decades watching how nutrition and physiology actually play out in real pregnancies — not in theory, but in the bodies and outcomes of my own clients. This program distills that clinical experience into a structured pathway, so that even if I'm not your delivering provider, you can still benefit from what I've learned caring for women through pregnancy, birth, and beyond.

That's the heart of it: the depth of one-on-one clinical care, made available to you wherever you are and whoever your primary provider is.

How it works

The program runs across your second and third trimesters and is organized around three core checkpoints, each anchored by functional lab work and a one-on-one consult. If you sign on early enough there is a morning sickness guide and support available.

1. Foundation — around 12 weeks

We begin with your baseline functional panel — the full panel (see Addendum) (a kit is ordered and shipped directly to you; you complete the b

lood draw with your current provider or a mobile phlebotomist and return it to the lab). This first consult is where your individualized care takes shape. Together we:

  • Review your baseline labs in depth and build a personalized supplement and lifestyle plan based on what your results — and your history — actually show.

  • Talk through your options for glucose screening at 26–28 weeks, tailored to your individual risk factors so you can make an informed choice about how you'd like to be tested.

  • If your blood type is Rh negative, cover nuanced, up-to-date education on your Rh options.

You'll receive an extensive written interpretation of your labs alongside the consult, plus your Second Trimester Nutrition Guide.

If your results or symptoms indicate it, follow-up labs before 28 weeks are available so we can stay ahead of anything that needs attention. (Twin pregnancies will have labs at 20weeks)

2. Optimization — after your 28-week labs

Your second panel and consult focus on the markers that shape a healthy third trimester. We'll assess:

  • Your blood sugar results, interpreted in light of the screening method you chose

  • Inflammation

  • Vitamin D status

  • Methylation and homocysteine risk

If your blood sugar results call for further work, the necessary follow-up — protocols, monitoring, and any repeat labs — is included as part of this stage. You'll receive your written interpretation, the consult, and your Third Trimester Nutrition Guide.

3. Preparation — around 36 weeks

Your final panel is focused on iron status heading into birth and breastfeeding — making sure your stores are strong for delivery, recovery, and feeding your baby. This consult also brings home any last follow ups that needed to happen (vitamin D levels for labor pain management?) This consult also leaves room for GBS discussion if you'd like it.

Note: GBS testing at 36 weeks is performed by your primary provider as part of standard prenatal care, so it isn't duplicated in your functional panel — but we're here to talk through it.

Along with your written interpretation and consult, you receive your Birth Preparation Guide — how to ready your body nutritionally for labor, recovery, and the early postpartum days.
